I'm sick today :[
Here's some pictures. Right now, I'm sick. I probably need to sleep? But I just woke up from a nap, so I probably won't. My only story for today happened before I left my hostel.
I came back into my room this morning following a phone call, and entered a conversation between Chino, my Indian roommate, and Peter, my well-traveled American roommate, that went approximately like this:
Peter: Wow man, that's crazy. [Without seeming too impressed, because that's part of his personality -Ed.]
Chino: Yah, man.
P: I've never kidnapped anyone before, except this girl, when I was a boy scout, because me and my buddy wanted to kiss her and stuff.
Me: How old were you?
P: Like, seven? [laughing dismissively] How old were you, Chino?
Ch: Thees was like, couple years ago?
Me: What did he do?
P: Kidnapped these tourists in India, man.
Ch: Did not really keednap, was more knife to throat, give me credit cards, then leave them alone.
Me: Really??
Ch: Oh yah man.
P: [Drawling, forcibly unimpressed] Wow, man. So, what'd you do with the money?
Ch: We went to Sri Lanka. Spend all of it, joo know, all sorts of stuff.
P: D'ja pick up any girls?
Ch: [non-committal grunt]
Me: I hear Sri Lanka is beautiful...
P: Yeah, except for them....except for those Tigers, right?
Ch: Yah man, in Sri Lanka joo know, there are four military on the street with you at all time. And at night, all shoot at each other.
Me: Well why'd you go there, if you got shot at!?
P: Nah, man, if you're Indian, they probably leave your [bleep] alone in Sri Lanka, right Chino?
Ch: Ya...
P: Man, I used to steal stuff...
Me: When? And what kinda stuff?
P: Oh, you know, car stereos. Usedta steal car stereos when I was 17, 18, sell it for pot.
Me: The most I ever stole was a yo-yo, and my mom made me take it back...
P: [laughter] You got a pretty clean conscience then, huh?
Me: Enh, you know; I can sleep at night.
P: Me too, man. Me too
Me: So what happened in Sri Lanka?
Ch: Got caught, man.
P: How'd they getchya?
Ch: Don' know. Never found out, man. Just, couple days later almost, knock knock on the fron' door, come and arrest joo.
P: And you never found out how they found out?
Ch: No...
P: Man, I would have wanted to find out how they found out it was you! Don't you feel bad about those people, man?
Ch: [non-committal grunt]
P: I would feel bad, man. Did they cry?
Ch: Ehhh....it was a more, eh... "Oh please don't hurt me", "Why are joo doing thees?" and that sorta theeng.
P: [with judgmental emphasis] You should send'em a card, man.
Me: Yeah, like a Christmas card!
P: Send'em a card, man. I would want to send them a card, you know? Just saying you're sorry. Are you sorry?
Ch: [non-committal grunt]
P: I would send'em a card, man.
Me: [tiptoes nervously to the shower as Peter brags about being a bouncer for a Chinese bookie in Singapore.]
It should be noted that on my second night here, I witnessed (while sitting right where I am now, in the lobby on the computer) a strange exchange between the chef who runs the Turkish restaurant next door, Chino, and the man who I assume manages this hostel (I never met him because I checked in after-hours with the night manager). The exchange involved a lot of ribbing and joking around, indicating that these three people have known each other long enough to be on inside-joke familiar terms. But at one point, the issue of money came up, and I gleaned that Chino is part of some deal with them, such that the money he makes working at the Lowe's Home Improvement store possibly goes towards the Qupqugiaq Inn manager? I don't know, I just know that that manager got upset with the Turkish chef for not having given him the proper amount of money recently. I am just spouting cobbled together eavesdroppings, which end up more resembling mouse droppings in my probable misinterpretation, so I'm going to shut up and get to the pictures.
These pictures show how high in the sky sun gets at noon
I want to live here:

Alex - I'm sorry you're sick. All that running around out in the cold, I imagine. You need to calm down, drink some orange juice, eat some chicken soup and stay inside for awhile. Are you taking your vitamins? Stay away from shady characters! Love, Mom
